Understanding the coverages of a car insurance policy can help you determine the best coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. Car insurance terms can be confusing and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording. Shown next are the normal coverages found on most car insurance policies.
Liability car insurance – This coverage protects you from damage or injury you incur to other people or property that is your fault. It protects YOU from claims by other people. Liability doesn’t cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. As an example, you may have values of 50/100/50 which stand for a limit of $50,000 per injured person, $100,000 for the entire accident, and $50,000 of coverage for damaged propery.
Liability can pay for claims like legal defense fees, repair costs for stationary objects, pain and suffering and emergency aid. How much liability coverage do you need? That is a personal decision, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as large an amount as possible.
Collision coverage – This coverage covers damage to your G-Class resulting from a collision with an object or car. You first must pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision coverage protects against things such as driving through your garage door, colliding with a tree and sideswiping another vehicle. This coverage can be expensive, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from vehicles that are older. Drivers also have the option to choose a higher deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Coverage for uninsured or underinsured drivers – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other motorists when they either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. This coverage pays for injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Since a lot of drivers only carry the minimum required liability limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is important protection for you and your family.
Coverage for medical expenses – Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP pay for bills for prosthetic devices, nursing services, EMT expenses, surgery and chiropractic care. They are often utilized in addition to your health insurance policy or if you lack health insurance entirely. Coverage applies to you and your occupants and also covers getting struck while a pedestrian. Personal Injury Protection is only offered in select states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
Comprehensive car insurance – This coverage pays for damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. A deductible will apply then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive insurance covers claims like theft, hitting a deer, damage from getting keyed and vandalism. The maximum payout a car insurance company will pay at claim time is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle’s value is low consider removing comprehensive coverage.
